Antelope Valley College has unveiled what will be the finest community college sports complex in southern California.

The new and upgraded facilities are a part of a series of new facilities to be built or expanded upon with funds from Measure R passed two years ago. These include a new maintenance and operations facility, new agricultural laboratories and a greenhouse, the west campus expansion project that will focus on renovation of the athletic stadium, campus infrastructure improvements, a new theater arts facility and a new health-science building.

The 5000 seat stadium is scheduled to begin construction on Nov. 15, and will include artificial turf, a new track, have equal seating on the home and visitor side and new press box. The entrance will shift from the southern to northern end of parking lot 3, in a more central location near the baseball and softball fields as well.

"We're taking the existing facilities and making them into a true athletic complex," Athletic Director Newton Chelette said. "That's not going to be unique, but there aren't that many schools that have made it like that, with all the facilities in one area."

The area to the west of Marauder Stadium, currently open desert, will be converted to soccer fields for AVC practice as well as community use.

"It's definitely going to be a heavily-used facility that will not only support the college, but also the community," Chelette said.

With more fields for practice and artificial turf on the playing field, the idea of a men's soccer team can be considered by the administration.

The baseball team will no longer be without a home stadium. When built the Marauders will have a baseball field capable of seating 300 fans, a press box and a new concessions stand located at the northwest end of Marauder Stadium.

The softball field will get a press boxes and concessions stands.

Site construction is scheduled to begin in June, with the construction of the buildings scheduled for November. The project is expected to be completed for the start of the 2008 Track and Field season and the 2009 Football season.
