TORRANCE - The Marauder beach volleyball has been off to a rough start this season.
AVC dropped its first two matches of the season, and on Friday the Marauders were skunked by both El Camino College and Rio Hondo College, by a score of 5-0, in each match.
The Marauders failed to win a set against El Camino. Not one of their five teams scored more than 15 points in any set. No. 1 duo of Samantha Tago and Maryah Tatum lost their match to El Camino's Sadie Fraker and Laynie Thompson, 21-12, 21-15. Nickeisha Williams and Michelle Shimamoto had no trouble with AVC's Hannah Douglas and Gizzelle Navarro, 21-9, 21-9.
The Marauders played much better against Rio Hondo in their second match. Tago and Tatum won the first set against Rio Hondo's Caleigh Cruz and Paula Alfrez, 21-14. However, Cruz and Alfrez rallied by winning the next two sets, 21-16, 15-8.
"We definitely should have beat both teams. In the second match I had a case of heat exhaustion," Tatum said. "We're improving a lot though. We're doing well and starting to put the pieces together. Once we have our chemistry down, we're going to do a lot better. I think all of us are starting to figure each other out."
Lauren Devine and teammate Bryleigh Bloemendaal won the first set against Rio Hondo's Tanya Metchkoff and Brenda Alvarado, 21-19. Metchkoff and Alvarado easily took the second set 21-8 and took home the match with a 15-8 win in the final set. Halondra Washington and Elizabeth Perez took the team of Stephanie Ross and Erika Mendoza to the limit before losing 21-16, 23-21.
