TAGO, TATUM REACH STATE PLAYOFFS

TORRANCE - Samantha Tago and Maryah Tatum advanced to the state tournament after a victory in the second round of the Western States Conference Individual Team playoffs.

Tago's way of celebrating - a frosty from Wendy's.

"I think I deserve it," she laughed.

Tago and Tatum propelled themselves into the state playoffs with a convincing win over Pierce College's Valentina Krivokapic and Megan Weaver, 21-16, 21-7. The duo from Pierce, both Krivokapic and Weaver stand six feet or better.

"Me and Maryah are really excited (to make state). We're playing really good. Everything is clicking between the both of us and we want to win so bad, we're doing everything we can to keep on winning," Tago said. "I think we can do some damage in state. We haven't really had a chance to let it sink in. Right now we're just enjoying the moment, but when practice comes we'll get down to business."

Despite losing their quarterfinal match, Tago and Tatum still move on to state. Tago and Tatum were defeated by Bakersfield College's Sarah Aurin and Alyssa Matthews, 21-13, 26-24.

The state playoffs will be held next week in El Cajon, hosted by Grossmont College.
