LANCASTER - Last season the Marauder women's basketball team wasn't expected to share a piece of the conference title, but it did.
This season AVC opens conference play on Saturday against Barstow as one of the favorites to win its second consecutive championship.
"This is a new season for us. We haven't been consistent so far this year week to week. I think we're finding the right balance now," AVC head coach Barry Green said. "One thing that we emphasize is that we have to make sacrifices, by putting in the extra work and being able to gel more with teammates. At times we don't do that."
Joining the Marauders is LA Valley, the team AVC shared the title with last season. However, this season the Marauders took their first matchup with the Monarchs and hold a slight edge mentally with that victory, despite the facet AVC hasn't been playing its best basketball as of late.
"Sometimes we lose focus and just need to play game by game. I think beating them gives us a little momentum," Green said. "In close games we've failed to find ways to win, but I think we're making strides."
The Marauders know they must win conference to make the playoffs or finish second hoping for a chance to get in. Citrus and Glendale should give both AVC and LA Valley a challenge. The Marauders host Barstow on Saturday at 5pm.
