In recognition of his lifelong dedication to athletics, Newton "Newt" Chelette, a cornerstone of Antelope Valley College sports, has been inducted into the prestigious 2026 California Community College Athletic Association (3C2A) Hall of Fame. The honor celebrates his remarkable contributions to coaching, administration, and community college athletics.
Chelette was celebrated during Hall of Fame Induction Dinner at the annual 3C2A Convention on April 1 in Burbank, CA.
At AVC, Chelette established a legacy that continues to resonate within Marauder Athletics. He remains the winningest men's basketball coach in the program's history and has earned numerous accolades, including seven Foothill Conference Coach of the Year awards and two 3C2A Southern California Coach of the Year honors.
Beyond the basketball court, Chelette's impact extends far wider. Throughout his time at AVC, he also coached men's golf, taught physical education, and held several key leadership positions, including Athletic Director, Dean, and later Vice President of Student Services.
Chelette's influence reached into the community as well; in 2014, he was honored as the City of Lancaster Citizen of the Year. This accolade recognized not only his impressive athletic achievements but also his deep commitment to civic engagement and community service.
In 2016, Antelope Valley College further commemorated his legacy by naming its newly renovated basketball floor the Newton Chelette Court. The tribute honors his decades of unwavering leadership and the remarkable success he brought to the Marauder men's basketball program.
Newton also held many roles with the California Community College Men's Basketball Coaches Association (CCCMBCA) over the span of 16 years. He served as president of the Foothill Conference, president of the Pacific Football Conference, chair of the California Statewide Competition Committee, vice chair and chair of the 3C2A Management Council, before assuming the role of Bay Valley Commissioner following his retirement from Antelope Valley.
