Antelope Valley College football picked up their second win in as many weeks with a 52-35 win over the West LA Wildcats in their home opener. John Sanders provided much of the offensive fireworks for a large AVC crowd at Brent Carder Marauder Stadium on Saturday. The freshman quarterback passed for three touchdowns and added another score on the ground.
The Wildcats struck first, but the Marauders went to work in response with a 5-play, 26-yard drive capped off by a 1-yard touchdown run from Daste Lee, his third of the season. West LA returned the ensuing kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown and added another 7 to take a 21-7 lead early in the second quarter. The Marauders struck back when Shawn Irwin caught a 5-yard touchdown pass from John Sanders.
Down 28-14 in the final minutes of the first half, AVC marched 72 yards in 11 plays for a 1-yard TD run by Niam Bankhead, his first of the year. AVC's Shakir Freeman then recovered a fumble on the kickoff to set up a 37-yard field goal from Lucas Bailey to end the half.
Antelope Valley erased the 4-point halftime deficit in the middle of the 3rd quarter when Daste Lee rushed 8 yards for his second touchdown of the game. Up 31-28, the Marauders never looked back as John Sanders ran for a 6-yard touchdown, followed by a 40-yard TD pass to Azim Bankhead.
Andrew Garner caught his first TD of the season in the 4th quarter, a 27-yard strike from Sanders. Sanders finished 21-37 for 231 yards and 3 touchdowns in the air, and 34 yards on the ground with a rushing touchdown.
Jayden Carrillo led the defense with 6 tackles, while Zyier Lane returned his second interception of the year for 20 yards. Jacob Fraser, Shakir Freeman, and Daste Lee each recorded a sack. Lucas Bailey was a perfect 7/7 on PATs and converted his only field goal attempt.
The Marauders are 2-0 and will next host Gossmont on Sat. 9/13 at 6 pm.
