Antelope Valley College Football improved to 3-0 with a 38-36 win over Grossmont College, courtesy of a last-minute field goal from Lucas Bailey. AVC found themselves in a hole early as the Griffins scored the first 10 points of the game, but were able to get on the board in the 1st quarter with an 11-yard strike from John Sanders to Damario Jackson. The pitch and catch capped off a 9-play 75-yard drive.
The Marauder offense settled in in the 2nd quarter to score two touchdowns, the only points of the period. Shawn Irwin (5/19, 1 TD) caught a 5-yard pass from Sanders. Followed by a 17-yard touchdown run from Niam Bankhead. AVC took a 21-16 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The offense continued after the break as Sanders added his third rushing touchdown of the season. AVC completed the 10-play drive with a 2-point conversion by Daste Lee. A great kick-off return gave Grossmont favorable field position for a quick score. But the Marauders would respond with another long drive, setting up a 1-yard touchdown run from Lee, his fourth of the season.
The Griffins mounted a 4th-quarter comeback with two touchdowns to take a 36-35 lead with just over two minutes to go. Zyier Lane then intercepted a Grossmont pass and returned it 47 yards. The Freshman from Lancaster High School leads the Marauders with three interceptions on the year, returning them for a total of 126 yards. Lane's interception would set up a 6-play, 58-yard Antelope Valley drive, resulting in a Lucas Bailey 19-yard field goal, which put the Marauders in front 38-36 with 10 seconds remaining. AVC held on for the win, bringing their record to 3-0, by far their best start in recent years. AVC ranks 11th in the 3C2A in offensive points per game at 41.0.
AVC's game leaders were John Sanders (23-34, 277 passing with 2 TD, 86 yards rushing, 1 TD), Niam Bankhead (21/100, Rushing, 1 TD), Damario Jackson (7/168 Receiving, 1 TD), Jayden Carrillo (11 total tackles).
