AVC Football came up just short in their 39-37 comeback battle against the Victor Valley Rams at home. The Marauders fell to 5-1 after suffering their first loss of the season in dramatic fashion.
The Rams struck first with a touchdown just four minutes in. AVC responded when Damario Jackson caught a 52-yard touchdown pass from John Sanders to end a 5-play, 75-yard drive. Momentum left the Marauders as Victor Valley accounted for five of the following six scores to close out the half. Naim Bankhead scored a 4-yard TD run, and Houston Brown caught a 2-point conversion in comparison to VVC scoring 3 touchdowns, a safety, and a field goal to take a 32-15 lead at the break.
Antelope Valley scored the only points of the 3rd quarter via a 1-yard touchdown run from John Sanders. They then opened the 4th quarter with a touchdown drive as John Sanders connected with Shawn Irwin for an 81-yard score. AVC converted the PAT for 2 to pull within a field goal, 32-29. On the next VVC drive, the Marauder defense forced a turnover, but the offense couldn't capitalize after failing to convert a crucial fourth-and-2 to keep the drive alive.
The Rams' offense took advantage of another opportunity with a touchdown, extending their lead to 39-29. The Marauders battled back once again as Jackson scored his second touchdown of the game with a 50-yard reception from Sanders. AVC once again made the 2-point conversion to pull back within a field goal, but the offense wouldn't get another chance as the Rams ran out the remainder of the clock.
John Sanders finished with a season-high 348 yards passing and 3 TDs; he also rushed 13 times for 58 yards and a score. Damario Jackson led all receivers with 153 yards on 6 catches with 2 touchdowns. Shawn Irwin also caught 5 passes for a season-high 137 yards and a touchdown. Funaki James (6 solo, 1 FF) and Houston Brown (3 solo) led the defense with 9 tackles each, while Peter Atallah recorded an interception and Jacob Fraser recorded a sack and a forced fumble.
The Marauders are 5-1 and will next face LA Southwest on the road on Saturday. Oct. 25 at 12 pm.
