CAMARENA HITS WALK-OFF AS SOFTBALL DEFEATS #4 RANKED MT. SAN ANTONIO
AVC Softball rallied late to defeat Mt. San Antonio 6-5.
Antelope Valley College Softball continued their strong start by defeating the Mt. San Antonio Mounties 6-5 in dramatic fashion. Both teams were undefeated heading into the contest, with the Mounties arriving at AVC ranked #4 in the 3CFCA Coaches' Poll.
AVC struck first in the 2nd inning as Jeannette Camarena hit an RBI double to score Angelina Quezada. Hartley Lundquist then hit a sacrifice to give the Marauders a 2-0 lead. Mt. SAC responded big, putting up 5 runs in the top of the 3rd inning. AVC's defense held strong for the rest of the game and had no errors on the day.
The Marauders pulled with a run in the 5th inning when Kaylei Victoria doubled to score Jordyn Zinn and Analise Memory.
Down 5-4 in the bottom of the 7th inning, AVC manufactured a 2-out rally as Jordyn Zinn doubled and both Kaylei Victoria and Marley Delgado walked to load the bases. With one at-bat left in regulation, Jeannette Camarena delivered a walk-off single up the middle to score Zinn and pinch-runner Quezada for the win.
"I honestly wasn't thinking about anything other than to breathe and hit the ball," commented Camarena on the game-winning hit.
Camarena finished 2-for-3 with 3 RBI. The sophomore catcher from Sylmar, CA (Granada Hills Charter HS), has totaled 5 hits in 7 at-bats to start the season and has a second-best 5 RBI on the team.
Kaylei Victoria went 2-for-3 with 2 RBI while Analise Memory finished with 2 hits. Victoria leads the Marauders with 10 RBI and has 7 hits in the first three games.
Starter Destiny Serna (2.1 IP), Kaylei Victoria (2.2 IP), and winning pitcher Hailey Davis (2.0 IP) split time in the circle as they combined for 7 strikeouts on the day.
The win moves the Marauders into the 3CFCA Rankings at #11 in the state, and #6 in the southern region. Antelope Valley is now 3-0 and will have another tough test against Riverside to kick off a 6-game road trip that includes matchups with Cerritos, Palomar, and Moorpark. AVC returns home on Feb. 17 to face Porterville in a doubleheader.
