RICHARD CURTIS
Richard Curtis became the first AVC Athletic Academic Advisor, creating an office that oversees, monitors, and counsels Marauder Student-Athletes so they may attain the academic goals they seek.
In his tenure as the Academic Affairs Advisor, which officially began in 1984, Curtis helped place 17 student-athletes on the State Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll, more than double the number at any other school at the time.
Curtis came to Antelope Valley College in 1970 as an assistant football coach and full-time instructor. As coach, he spent 20 seasons coaching various positions, including AVC's 1974 State Championship team. He retired as an instructor in 1997.
He was also the Marauders' wrestling coach from 1970 to 1975. In those five seasons, AVC won the Western State Conference and Central Conference titles and finished second in the other three years. Those teams also won two state small school championships.
The Whit Carter Hall of Fame now becomes a family affair, as Curtis will join his son Kevin ( inducted in 1996) in the Whit Carter Hall of Fame for Academic Achievement. It is the first time both a parent and child have been named to the Hall.
